TIPPERARY INTERMEDIATE TEAM

Tipperary crossed the border to Fraher Field, Dungarvan last
Sunday to play Waterford in Round 3 of the Tesco Homegrown National Football
League.  Rivals of old these two teams
met each other last year in the Munster Championship when only a goal separated
the teams.  The teams always provide
outstanding games of football and Sunday was no different.

Tipperary within two minutes of the throw in raised the
green flag with a Lorraine O’Shea goal while Waterford took a few minutes to
settle.  In the eighth and ninth minute
respectively, Michelle McGrath and Mairead Wall found the posts for Waterford
to be followed quickly by Hannah Landers first goal of the day. With Waterford
now in the lead Tipperary turned to the Carroll sisters for the equaliser,
Claire and Edith respectively pointed the ball to do this. Heading into the
second quarter both teams proved that there was nothing between them but the
kick of the ball and in the second quarter Tipperary had the extra kick to find
the posts with points from Gillian O’Brien, Mairead Morrissey and Claire
Carroll while Waterford’s Linda Wall and Michelle Ryan secured their two
points.  Waterford’s Michelle McGrath was
sin binned in the twenty seventh minute and Tipperary went in at the break with
an extra player and point. Tipperary 1-5 Waterford 1-4

As in the first half Lorraine O’Shea started the scoring in
the second half with a point in the first minute.  Tipperary placed the extra person in the
backs and reduced Waterford’s ability to score until in the thirty seventh
minute Michelle McGrath resumed her position.
Waterford’s Linda Wall and Michelle Ryan scored the next two points to
equalise the game for third time.  In the
forty first and forty second minute Mairead Morrissey pointed twice while
Waterford showed signs of the pressure Tipperary had placed on them when Michelle
Ryan missed a hat trick of frees in the following three minutes.  Claire Carroll reasserted the pressure with
another point in the final minute of the third quarter.  Waterford steadied themselves again with a
point from Linda Wall before Hannah Landers found the net for the second time.
This was the turning point of the game and despite another sin bin for
Waterford Tipperary could not close the gap of the monumental point.  Both teams registered another point on their
score lines before the final whistle blew with Waterford claiming the three
points to put them at the top of the League table with nine points, three
wins.  Waterford 2-8 Tipperary 1-10

Tipperary are fourth on the National League Table heading
into a free weekend but due to match postponements owing to bad weather Armagh (second)
and Leitrim (third) still have a game to play next weekend.  Tipperary introduced two more League
debutants as an injured Aisling O’Connor made way for the Lauren Fitzpatrick,
Ardfinnan in goal while Kirsty Downey, Cahir lined out at corner-forward.
