Limerick get back on Winning Ways

Breda Ahern reports on Limericks 7-8 to 2-3 victory over Derry in played in Watty Graham Glen pitch in Maghera for Round 3 of the Tesco Homegrown NFL.

In keeping with the dull damp day and the very heavy underfoot conditions, the first half of this game produced very little by way of quality football. The gloom of that period was only punctuated by the sweet strikes of Louise Ryan and Megan O Mara in raising green flags, these were followed by points from Orlaith O’Donoghue and Siobhan Moloney, leaving the score at the short break 2-2 to 1-2 in favour of the Treaty girls.

The second half was a completely different affair, with the Limerick girls playing with far more focus and discipline. The errors of the first were reduced, and a highlight for the management must have been the displays of the younger girls up front grabbing the opportunity afforded to them by so many forced absences, and the Limerick debut of Beulah McManus in defence.

There were some sublime scores in the second half by a free flowing attack, no more so than the opening goal of the half by Marie Curtin following a deft, precise passing movement. This was followed by 2 goals from half time substitute Megan O’Shea, another from Megan O’Mara, with Marie Curtin bringing proceedings to a close with another green flag in the 59 minute.
