Kingdom overcome Rebels late

Imelda Roche was in Dingle to see Kerry defeat league champions Cork in this all Munster battle.

Kerry made home advantage count
on Sunday, defeating Cork
in the Tesco HomeGrown National League fourth round in Dingle all part of the
#KerryLadiesSpringSeries. They won by the slimmest of the margins; with the
winning point coming from local girl Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh who also scored
Kerry’s only goal. It was a shaky start to the game from the home side, with Cork breaking down the
first attack of the game from Kerry & moving the ball swiftly downfield,
Doireann O’Sullivan blasted to the back of the Kerry net.

It was a very tough
physical encounter with both teams uncompromising, resulting in a relatively
low scoring first half. Kerry only managed 2 points in the first half from
Bernie Breen & Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh & will be disappointed with
the poor return despite equal possession. Half time Kerry 0-2 Cork 1-03. However a much more focused Kerry
side took to the field in the second half & within 10 minutes only a goal
separated the sides. Kerry took the lead for the first time on the 41st
minute when Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh goaled for Kerry, reacting first to a
ball that hit off the upright. She was a menace all afternoon to Cork as she also nearly
goaled a second time a clever flick in the air that just went wide. Minutes
after the goal however Kerry’s Julie Brosnan was sin binned & Cork took advantage of the
extra player & went ahead again.

However Kerry with the sizeable home crowd
cheering them on were not about to lose on home territory & Sarah Houlihan
scored a lovely long range point to level the game. But then in the final
minutes of the game up popped local favourite Louise Ni M with the winning
point. Cork
quickly tried to get another attack going from the kick out but Kerry were
quick to snuff it out, winning the kick out. Referee Keith Delahunty’s whistle
was music to the large home crowds’ ears as Kerry took full points. Final Score
Kerry 1-08 Cork 1-07. Many thanks to Dingle
GAA club for hosting the game, the facilities despite recent weather conditions
were fantastic & encouraged a large home crowd to come out & cheer on
the Kerry ladies.

Also thanks to Paul Geaneys Bar & Restaurant/Sizzlerz
Steakhouse for supporting the game. Next up for Kerry is a tough away fixture
to Monaghan on March 9th
Kerry in a very fortunate position of having their final 3 games at home
– 26th March, 30th March & 6th April. The
2012 & 2013 All Stars head to Hong Kong on
the 11th March with 7 Kerry representatives & 2012 All Star team
managed by William O’Sullivan.
