Kerry capitalised on their
success against
last week by defeating table toppers Monaghan in Inniskeen on Sunday 9th
March in the Tesco HomeGrown National League.
In a game that was played with the pace & ferocity of championship
it was a good test of the travelling side.
Monaghan opened up a quick lead, as they went ahead by 2 points but
Debra Murphy replied for Kerry on the 9th minute with a very well
taken goal to put Kerry ahead by the bare minimum.
However Monaghan on home
territory started to pull away & hit 5 unanswered points to lead with just
6 minutes on the clock for half time whistle. But Kerry finished the half in
powerful fashion & hit 1-03 in the last 4 minutes of the half, the goal
from Louise Ni Mhuirteartaigh. Half time Monaghan 0-7 Kerry 2-06.
Within
minutes of the restart Debra Murphy forced the Monaghan keeper into a point
blank save, which served as a wake up call for the home side. After sustained
level of pressure, Monaghan finally broke Kerry defence down & got a goal
of their own from Ellen McCarron to leave a goal between the sides. It was
now Monaghan 1-10 Kerry 2-09. However
Kerry who have now developed a teak tough exterior absorbed the Monaghan
pressure & tacked on some scores to hold onto the lead.
An exciting end to
a wonderful game of football. Final Score: Monaghan 1-12 Kerry 2 -11.
That win
leaves Kerry in a strong position heading into the home stretch of the
#KerryLadiesSpringSeries, with 3 home games remaining. Kerry face Laois on the
26th March, Mayo 30th March & finally Donegal on 6th
April.
