Donal Barry was at Clonmel to see Colaiste Dun Iascaigh
defeat St Augustineâs 1-14 to 1-7 to capture the Junior A post primary title.
It might well be true for buses that you wait an age for one
and then two come along together. Well that was certainly the feeling as Colaiste
Dun Iascaigh completed a historic double when they saw off a game St
Augustineâs side to capture the Junior A title to add to the Senior A title
that they won earlier this season.
Carrying the favourites tag into the final having comfortably
defeated their opponents at the group stages, the Cahir side who dominated the
possession stakes still needed a 58th minute goal by Caoimhe Condon
to finally secure the Junior crown.
The opening exchanges were even as Cahir edged the first
quarter 0-3 to 0-2. Indeed it may well have been a bigger lead but St. Augustineâs
defended bravely and kept an attacking Cahir at bay for long stages and forced
them to kick 6 wides in that period.
The Angela Walsh led Augustineâs then hit the front on the
17th minute after a beautifully struck goal by Kaeisha Tobin, which had
them ahead 1-2 to 0-3. However, it may well have been more but for a costly
miss in front of goal by Augustineâs when they were one and one with the
keeper.
The goal ignited the Cahir challenge and they replied with five
unanswered points in the lead up to half time to take a 0-8 to 1-2 lead as
Aisling Moloney, Aoife Corcoran and Roisin Howard drove on the Tipp challenge.
Cahir through Moloney and the lethal Howard (Who was to
finish with 0-7) extended the lead to five points within minutes of the re
start as they looked to run riot.
Some steady defensive work form Megan Dunford, Sinead Flynn,
Aisling OâConnor and in particular the very safe Cadla McGrath in goal kept the
Cahir tide at bay and indeed by the midway stage of the second half Augustineâs
were in the ascendancy.
Three unanswered points had the Waterford side in sight by
the 55th minute as they trailed 1-6 to 0-12 but a strong finish
along with a 58th minute goal by Caoimhe Condon was enough to secure
the historic double.
St Augustineâs through Kaeisha Tobin, Bronagh Condon, Sinead
Flynn, Megan Dunford and Cadhla McGrath were well served while for the winners
Aisling Moloney, Linda Murphy, Aoife Corcoran, Caoimhe Condon and Roisin Howard
all played telling parts.
Cahir now play the Connacht champions in the All-Ireland
semi-final on March 22nd
