Cahir CS victorous as Colaiste pay penalty

Colaiste Na Sceilge 1-5  Cashel Community School 3-10

By Kerry Sports Hub

Three missed penalties just summed up the kind of luck that Colaiste Na Sceilge (CNS) enjoyed today as they were defeated by Cashel Community School in the LIDL Munster Post Primary Junior B Final at Millstreet.

Having fought off Tipperary opposition in the semi-final in Thurles, they could not handle a Cashel side who defeated Sliabh Luachra in their semi final who were deserving winners.

First half goals either end a pair of missed penalties by the Kerry side were to prove crucial for Cashel who claimed the half time advantage 2-2 to 0-2 despite playing into a considerable breeze.

Indeed it was the Tipp girls that opened the scoring through Alessia Mazzola but a brace of scores from Shannon O’Donnell had the Cahirciveen side ahead by the 5th minute. It was a lead that lasted all of a minute as Anna Fahie goaled on the next attack with Mazzola the provider.

Then followed a barren spell of almost twenty minutes without a score from either team but it was not from the want of trying.

CNS’s Clara Daly was hauled to the ground on 8 minutes as they won a penalty but the impressive Caoilnn Casey in the Cashel goal saved on her line and she repeated the trick ten minutes later when Leah Dwyer was downed in the square.

A goal would come but it was the Tipp side that would pinch it as Anna Murphy poked her effort home despite the best efforts of Mary Ellen Bulger to see her side ahead by six points at the break.

With the wind at their backs the Tipp side powered on in the second half with Emer McCarthy coming more into it from midfield as she scored 1-3 in a ten minute spell that saw the winners push 3-8 to 0-04 ahead by the end of the third quarter.

The South Kerry side enjoyed a purple spell of their own in the final quarter as substitute Lauren Curran who came on in the 20th minute would find the net and ended with a personal total of 1-3, only matched on the field by McCarthy.

But the penalty curse would haunt the Kerry side once again before full time as Lauren Curran’s sweetly struck shot hit the butt of the post only to rebound back into play having done everything but cross the line.

Munster LGFA Development Officer Dan O’Mahony presented the Junior B Cup to Emer McCarthy as Richie Ryan’s side look forward to an All Ireland semi final against St Nathy’s.

For Colaiste Na Sceilge they now turn their attention to the All Ireland Senior B semi final knowing that reaching two Munster finals in the one season is certainly a fine achievement.
