Carrick make in two for Tipperary

In a week when a Tipperary side ensured victory at the
highest grade at Munster Post Primary level another Tipp side Scoil Mhuire
Carrick captured the Senior B title and will now go in search of an All-Ireland
title as well. The final score line of 2-8 to 1-10 tells a story of a ding dong
battle throughout but a pivotal 3-minute spell in the final quarter of the
first half was to have a huge bearing on the outcome of this encounter.

Trailing by 1-4 to 0-1 Carrick on Suir looked to have been
dead and buried as the accurate Liz Devine was making them pay for their every indiscretion
in front of goal and when a 19th minute goal from Aisling Mullaney
found the net for St. Augustine’s it was to set in motion an amazing few
minutes.

From the kick out the ball was carried down the field by
Carrick and with Ger Power’s wonderful pass finding Shauna Power. She made no
mistake from close distance. St Augustine’s in the next play saw Shannon
Dunford one on one with the Carrick keeper Cailin Power but a wonderful save
denied them an instant reply. The next play saw Mairead Power see her shot end
in the Augustine net as the excited spectators needed a break to follow the
chain of events.

Liz Devine ended the minutes of madness and restored the Waterford’s
side advantage on the stroke of half time to a point, which at one stage was
out to six. They headed to the break 1-5 to 2-1 ahead.

The second half saw no repeat of the loose play. The teams
contained each other well in the first quarter as both sets of backs settled to
their task well with some tremendous tackling from Caoimhe McGrath and Megan
Dunford on the Friary side while Aishling Hahesy and Aoife Meaney repelled many
of the Waterford’s side’s attacks.

By the 45th, minute Augustine’s still held onto their
lead 1-8 to 2-4 but the failure to turn their possession into scores was to
tell. Despite defending well the dam finally broke and Carrick kicked 4 points
without reply edging to victory and despite two late Augustine points, they
could not get any closer as Thomas Walsh’s full time whistle cut short their fight
back.
