Wins for Kerry and Galway but it’s Waterford who lead the way
Lidl National Football League round-up
Compiled by John Fallon
IN-form Waterford made it three wins from three in Division 1 of the Lidl National League on Saturday.
The Déise preserved the only 100 per cent record in the top flight as they got the better of TG4 All-Ireland senior champions Dublin in Dungarvan.
A goal from Lauren McGregor helped Waterford lead by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break and they did not relent after the restart as they continued their winning start as TG4 All-Ireland champions Dublin fell to their third successive loss of the campaign.
Elsewhere in Division 1, there were two games on Sunday with the Armagh clash against Cork falling victim to the weather. League champions Kerry and Division 2 title holders Galway both chalked up their second wins of the campaign.
Kerry travelled to Meath and carved out a 4-10 to 2-12 with Síofra O’Shea scoring 1-6 and Leah McMahon getting two goals.
The reigning champions by 2-5 to 1-7 at half-time with Orla Finnegan getting the Meath goal, but Kerry got an edge again in the second half to make it two wins from three in the defence of their title.
Galway’s full-forward line of Andrea Trill, Leanne Coen and Róisín Leonard struck 3-7 between them as they defeated Kildare by 3-12 to 1-7 in Tuam.
Galway led by 2-6 to 0-5 at the break and pushed on from there as they bounced back from their loss to Cork last time out.
In Division 2 on Sunday, Donegal, with two goals from Katie Dowds and one from Ciara McGarvey, won the top of the table clash with Tyrone to preserve their 100 per cent start with a 3-9 to 1-8 win.
Mayo maintained their unbeaten start with a 0-9 to 0-7 win over Tipperary, while Cavan secured their second win when a goal from Niamh Keenaghan heled them to a 1-11 to 2-6 win over Wexford.
An early goal from Éabha Sherry set Monaghan on their way to their first win when they defeated a Westmeath side 1-12 to 1-6 who were also searching for their first victory.
In Division 3, leaders Down continued their impressive form by seeing off Clare by 7-13 to 4-13. There were also wins for Laois and Louth, while Roscommon and Antrim drew.
Waterford continue brilliant start as Dublin fall to third defeat
Lidl National Football League Division 1
Waterford 1-10
Dublin 0-8
By Jordan Norris
Waterford continued their perfect start to the Lidl National Ladies Football League with a deserved five-point victory against All-Ireland champions Dublin in Dungarvan.
Emma Murray, Bríd McMaugh and Aine O’Neill starred whilst Lauren McGregor’s first half goal proved crucial as Tomas Mac an tSaoir’s side picked up another landmark victory as Dublin fell to their third defeat in a row in this year’s league.
Dublin started the brighter and opened the scoring on three minutes courtesy of a fine run and point from Sophie McIntyre, and they soon doubled their advantage when Kate Donaghy finished off a patiently worked move.
Katie Murray set up Áine O’Neill for Waterford’s opener but Jodi Egan quickly responded and Dublin led 0-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Settling their early nerves, the hosts responded excellently – a close range free was dispatched by Chloe Fennell before the brilliant McMaugh was afforded space and duly levelled proceedings.
It fast became the McMaugh show as she reeled off two more to establish a cushion, before a great block from McIntyre denied Kellyann Hogan a chance to fire the opening goal. Waterford were playing with confidence now as Player of the Match Emma Murray rode a number of challenges to split the posts on 20 minutes.
Dublin needed inspiration and it arrived via a brilliant strike from Orlagh Nolan, but two minutes later – they found themselves five behind as the Déise found the net four minutes before the break. Murray’s effort dropped short but was spilled by Abby Shiels to McGregor, and the Dungarvan forward made no mistake to establish a deserved 1-6 to 0-4 advantage at the interval.
They very nearly struck for goal two early in the second period, but Shiels denied Maeve Daly. Daly did recycle excellently to set up Ruby Browne however and the lead grew to six. Daly then set up Hogan as there were seven points between the sides after 40 minutes, but Michelle Davoren kept the All-Ireland champions ticking.
Laura Grendon fisted over to further reduce arrears, before the gap was back to four when Niamh Hetherton swivelled to score approaching the final quarter. A free from Hogan calmed Déise nerves, as did the continued defensive interventions of the excellent Karen McGrath and Laura Mulcahy.
A sweet strike from O’Neill made Waterford much more comfortable heading down the home straight. Annabelle Timothy dissected the posts as Dublin tried to salvage the game, but Waterford never looked in danger as they cruised to a third successive win, further exemplifying their growing title credentials.

The old adage goals win games proved true as Kerry got back to winning ways when they defeated Meath in an entertaining contest in the Lidl NFL Division 1 game played at the Meath Hill GAA Grounds.
The Kingdom scored three goals in the first half and then added a fourth in the second half. Síofra O’Shea was superb in the forward line scoring 1-6 (four frees).
Kerry made a great start to the game with a goal in the second minute through Leah McMahon in her first start for Kerry. Meath got their first score in the sixth minute, a point from Emma Duggan. They followed that up with another to cut the gap to one in the seventh minute.
A nice ball in from Anna Galvin found McMahon and she made no mistake grabbing her second goal. Kerry followed up with points from Dannielle O’Leary and O’Shea to put six between the sides after 12 minutes.
Meath responded from that Kerry spell with a pointed free from Duggan and a neat goal from Orla Finnegan. Twice in seven minutes Meath came to within one point of Kerry.
The excellent O’Shea kicked two points (one free) to put three between the sides in the 28th minute but Duggan and Ciara Smyth fired over points in stoppage time to leave Meath trailing by one at the break at 2-5 to 1-7.
Three minutes into the second half Kerry got their third goal with a lovely finish from O’Shea. Duggan was on target yet again firing over a free minutes later. Every time Meath came to within a point of the Kingdom the reigning league champions were able to hit back with a score.
With two in the game Kerry got their fourth goal in the 53rd minute when Mary O’Connell fired a good shot to the net but Kerry were dealt a blow when Cáit Lynch had to go off injured in the 57th minute.

Lidl National Football League Division 1
Cork 2-8
Armagh 1-9
By Elaine Ingram
Cork made the long trip to Crossmaglen on Sunday for this rescheduled Lidl National Football League Division 1 fixture after the match was postponed last weekend due to a waterlogged pitch in Dromintee and they made the journey worthwhile as they edged out Armagh in tough conditions.
The sun was shining in Oliver Plunkett Park but a strong swirling wind, which somewhat favoured Cork in the opening half, nonetheless made scoring tricky, with the wide count high.
It was Armagh who led by two points at the break, thanks to a goal on 26 minutes provided by Alana Donnelly.
Cork had most of the ball up to then however, with points from play courtesy of Abigail Ring and Aimee Corcoran, following traded frees between Armagh’s Kelly Mallon and Katie Quirke.
A third Mallon free had the sides level before the super run and goal from Donnelly but Aine O’Sullivan, who travelled the whole way from the Beara Peninsula on Sunday, pointed from play leaving the half-time score 1-3 to 0-4 in favour of Armagh.
Some great defending at both ends denied further scores from materialising, until a couple of Cork points levelled proceedings at 1-3 to 0-6 with 10 minutes of the half played.
Brianna Mathers in the Orchard goal did well from a couple of high balls but after Mallon had nudged Armagh in front again Rachel O’Regan netted on 48 minutes, giving the Leesiders a 1-6 to 1-4 lead.
Rachel Leahy added a second goal for Cork and while the home side got within a point with a free from outside the arc by Mallon, Cork had done enough for a two point victory.
Scorers – Cork: R O’Regan 1-0, R Leahy 1-0, K Quirke 0-2 (1f), A Corcoran 0-2, A O’Sullivan 0-2, A Ring 0-1, A Kennedy 0-1.
