It was Cork side Glanmire’s day as they were crowned AIB Munster Ladies Football Senior B champions after their win over Kilmurry/Ibrickane in the final at Mallow on Saturday.
The Cork side were the better side from start to finish despite the best efforts of Kilmurry/Ibrickane, who gave it everything right to the final whistle.
By half-time, having played against the wind, Glanmire led by 1-10 to 0-2 and it was always going to be tough for Kilmurry/Ibrickane from here.
Three second half goals made it a great day for Glanmire on a day it was fitting they won as they celebrated the 25th anniversary of the founding of the club that evening at the Vienna Woods Hotel.
Orlaith Roche, who was named Player of the Game afterwards, opened the scoring in the first minute for Glanmire before Chloe Moloney replied at the other end.
A good block by Clodagh O’Donovan saw her set up Roche for her second point to put Glanmire back in front after four minutes.
In a low scoring start it took until the 12th minute for the next point to be scored, with Roche getting her third.
From the restart they added another, this time Niamh McAllen pointing for Glanmire.
Olivia McAllen picked up the ball from the restart and she played Evie Twomey in to increase their lead and by the time we reached the 15th minute they were 0-7 to 0-1 to the good.
Roche scored their seventh point and soon they had their eighth, this time Ellen Baker setting up Ally McCarthy to point as Kilmurry/Ibrickane were finding it hard to get out of their own half.
Glanmire stretched their lead even further after 21 minutes when McCarthy got on the end of a good team move to score the game’s opening goal, to make it 1-8 to 0-1.
It took from the second minute until the 24th for Kilmurry/Ibrickane to get their second score, when Ciara McCarthy pointed.
But Glanmire responded immediately at the other end, with Niamh McAllen getting her second, to see the Cork side lead by 1-10 to 0-2 at half-time.
A free from Moloney narrowed the gap, before Roche was on target again for Glanmire.
Evie Twomey made it 1-12 to 0-3, before Roche got her sixth point to keep Glanmire well in control.
Any chance of a Kilmurry/Ibrickane comeback were wall and truly dashed after 40 minutes when Olivia McAllen got Glanmire’s second goal to make it 2-13 to 0-3.
McAllen and Ally McCarthy both scored late goals to seal their win, which was well and truly secured long before the final whistle went.
