Yoplait Ladies HEC O’Connor Cup

UL 0-12
UCC 0-11

By Daragh Small

UL captain Fiadhna Tangney scored 0-4 and her side were crowned Yoplait O’Connor Cup champions again after a thrilling win over UCC.
The holders held a 0-10 to 0-4 lead at half-time and they went on to make it five titles since 2014 at a wet and windy DCU Dóchas Éireann.
But it was not without a scare, UCC came with a late fightback and they almost got level before the end only for the equaliser to evade them.
Tangney won the toss and UL played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half. They scored twice in the opening minute with Erone Fitzpatrick and Tangney on target.
UL went on to take a 0-8 to 0-0 lead into the water break. UCC were struggling to contend with the driving rain into their faces, Tangney brought her tally to 0-4, while Niamh O’Connor, Ailish Morrissey and Hannah O’Donoghue also chipped in, in the opening quarter.
The reigning champions were making the most of their wind advantage but Katie Quirke set up Sadhbh O’Leary and she got UCC’s first point of the game in the 22nd minute.
Ciara McCarthy scored from distance shortly afterwards and Sarah Leahy got forward for another but Morrissey steadied the UL ship, and they were 0-9 to 0-3 in front approaching half-time.
Aisling Reidy and Emma Cleary exchanged points before the interval and Quirke was inches away from a badly needed goal.
However, UL went in with a six-point lead and although Cleary scored early in the second half there was no onslaught. Instead, Morrissey scored her third, this time from a free, and almost found the net moments later.
That left the door open for UCC who were still in the game, trailing 0-11 to 0-5, in the 39th minute. Quirke was next to score but Morrissey answered that again and it looked like UL would cruise to the win.
However, UCC caught fire in the closing quarter; Kellyann Hogan scored in the 50th minute and further points from Quirke (two), McCarthy and Laura O’Mahony brought the lead down to just one with time running out.
UCC were on the brink and they had a number of chances late on but Hogan shot wide from a free and they couldn’t find another opening to draw the sides level.

Yoplait Ladies HEC O’Connor Cup

UL 4-13

NUI Galway 1-12

By Aisling Clery

UL Captain Fiadhna Tangney hit 1-6 and the holders secured their spot in the HEC Yoplait O’Connor Cup final at the expense of NUI Galway at DCU Dóchas Éireann Sports Campus.
Four second half goals were the difference with Tangney, Ailish Morrissey, Hannah O’Donoghue and Erika O’Shea all finding the net for DJ Collins’ side. Eva Noone was in excellent form for the Galway university but it wasn’t enough as UL progressed to a final meeting with UCC tomorrow.
The opening quarter favoured NUI Galway with Eva Noone scoring two points from frees in the first three minutes. Tangney scored at the other end before Noone added two more scores.
Erone Fitzpatrick opened her account for UL before Lauren McGregor cancelled that out from a free. Noone scored another free but Morrissey pointed to ensure NUI Galway led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the break.
Fitzpatrick and Tangney reduced the gap to one after the water break with Tangney also forcing a save from NUI Galway goalkeeper Karen Connolly. Noone and Morrissey swapped points before Fitzpatrick levelled the sides on 21 minutes.
Points from Tangney (free) and Hannah O’Donoghue pushed the UL team into the lead for the first time. UL were enjoying more of the possession but Eva Noone scored on the stroke of half-time to leave the minimum between the sides at the break, 0-9 to 0-8.
The second half burst into life as Niamh O’Connor’s shot rebounded off the crossbar and Morrissey was the first to the loose ball, she found the back of the net. UL could have been further ahead as Connolly saved from Siobhan McMahon. Sinead Regan scored for NUI Galway but when O’Donoghue netted, there looked to be no going back. At the second half water break UL were 2-11 to 0-9 in front.
O’Shea rifled to the net for UL’s third goal on the resumption and although NUI Galway did score a consolation through Eimear O’Kane, Tangney added 1-1 to ensure UL returned to another O’Connor Cup final.

Yoplait Ladies HEC O’Connor Cup    Semi Final

UCC 2-5
DCU Dóchas Éireann 0-8

By Daragh Small

Katie Quirke’s first half goal was crucial as UCC booked their place in the final of the Yoplait O’Connor Cup with victory over DCU Dóchas Éireann.
The Cork ace struck in the first half and her side took a narrow lead into half-time, before they held on with Anna Carey on target for their second goal at the DCU Dóchas Éireann Sports Campus.
The reigning Division 1 champions dominated the early exchanges but they went into the first water break trailing by a point, and they were 1-3 to 0-5 in arrears at half-time.
TG4 All-Star Emma Duggan opened the scoring in the sixth minute, en route to a personal tally of 0-6. She converted a free following a foul on Maria Reilly, who was a late inclusion in the DCU Dóchas Éireann starting 15.
But UCC found a way into the game and a point from Ciara McCarthy drew the sides level nine minutes later, with her second score giving UCC the advantage for the first time.
The Cork outfit were 0-2 to 0-1 in front at the water break and although Duggan landed her second free to tie it up, UCC took a stranglehold when Quirke found the net. She capitalised after a goalmouth scramble and finished past the stricken Abby Shiels in the 23rd minute.
DCU Dóchas Éireann scored 0-3 before half-time with Duggan adding two frees and one from play but Kellyann Hogan rounded off the scoring to give her side the lead.
Hogan scored again after the restart and Carey scored the second UCC goal in the 37th minute when the opposition defence failed to deal with Quirke’s delivery.
Emma Morrissey was on target with the only DCU Dóchas Éireann point in the third quarter and they were left with a 2-4 to 0-6 deficit.
And even when Jennifer Dunne and Duggan combined to give their side a lifeline, DCU Dóchas Éireann were always chasing the game. UCC held firm and Quirke scored a fine effort late on to put a gloss on the scoreline.

Scorers – UCC: K Quirke 1-1, A Carey 1-0, C McCarthy 0-2, K Hogan 0-2 (2f).
